How much sugar do you consume a day? Think about that... do you really even know? Sugar is hidden EVERYWHERE! It's the first thing we taste as humans from birth, which if you think about it, it kind of setting us up for failure. Studies have shown that detoxing sugar from your system can effect the brain the same way cocaine and alcohol does- how crazy is that?!?!
The average person has about 95 grams of sugar a day adding up to about 77 pounds per year! Now that's a lot of sugar!!! 1 out of 3 adults are obese due to sugar consumption and 2 out of 5 children. Unfortunately places like Starbucks serve coffee drinks that will take you far past your recommended daily amount. A flavored coffee can have up to 47g of sugar, a can of soda is up to 40g!! It doesn't help that grocery stores now carry more sugary products making up 80% of there inventory on the shelves!!
So how do we cut sugar when it tastes so good?? We have a few easy tips you can try to help slowly eliminate sugar from your diet.
1. Give In A Little - going cold turkey may work for some people but most of the time you just end up sabotaging yourself. Try a BITE of something instead of nothing at all.
2. Combine Foods - have a banana with a little peanut butter or almonds with some dairy-free chocolate chips
3. Grab Some Natural Gum - reduces the sugar craving (try out the brand "Simply Gum" or "Spry" Brands)
4. Reach for Fruit - fiber and nutrients are key!
5. Get Up and Go - take a walk, change your scenery to help take your mind off the craving
6. Choose Quality Over Quantity - one dark chocolate truffle is a way better option than a king size candy bar
7. Eat Regularly - waiting to long between meals set you up to choose sugary foods
8. Drink 1/2 Your Body Weight in Ounces of Water Daily - water will help to keep you feeling full!
You might find you're more lethargic or anxious or have a headache and maybe even muscle pain- this is all common when detoxifying from sugar. It's important to stay active and busy during this process. Reach out to friends, avoid excess stress, and triggers that might prompt wanting a chocolate bar!
Tips for the Headaches
Drink tons of water and add in some pink Himalayan sea salt
Take an Epsom salt bath if you can - 2 cups of epsom salt, 1/2 cup of baking soda and 2 tbsp sea salt. Soak for 20 minutes before bed.
