Healthy Candles + Insomnia Tips!

What are you really smelling in your candles?

When you walk into the local candle store in the mall or the shopping plaza, what's the first thing you smell?

Do you smell an apple pie baking in the oven? Maybe pumpkin spice this fall or warm vanilla cookies?  Have you ever stopped to think what you're truly smelling are...CHEMICALS!?!?!! Yes, some of these larger, name brand candle companies use both naturally essential oils and some artificial chemicals and scents to get that yummy scent and then place those oils in paraffin wax.  

Paraffin Wax -  a flammable, whitish, translucent, waxy solid consisting of a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, obtained by distillation from petroleum or shale and used in candles, cosmetics, polishes, and sealing and waterproofing compounds.

Paraffin wax, when burned, creates highly toxic benzene and toluene which are known carcinogens. When a paraffin candle releases these toxins they are the same toxins found in diesel fuel fumes. We recommend looking for candles created with soy, beeswax, coconut wax, hemp oil or some combination of a natural oil that does NOT contain any paraffin.  

Not only are we trying to avoid paraffin's but we want to make sure that the wicks used in your candles are lead free! Most candles will tell you if they are "lead-free" but if you are unsure, you can take an unburnt candle and rub the tip of the wick on a piece of paper.  If it leaves a gray mark, like a pencil would, the wick contains lead! AVOID!!

Tips for Insomnia + Essential Oils

  • Wake up and go to bed at the same time each day

  • Eliminate alcohol and stimulants like nicotine and caffeine

  • Limit naps

  • Exercise regularly - not to close to bedtime
